The last man in a forsaken Outback ghost town contaminated with deadly amounts of asbestos refuses to leave and says he misses nothing about civilisation. Wittenoom was once a thriving town in the Western Australian desert getting rich off mining asbestos used to construct almost every building in the country. But the residents and migrant workers started dying of cancer and as the deadly effects of asbestos became known, the town was abandoned.

Mario Hartmann, the last resident of a forsaken outback ghost town of Wittenoom, contaminated with deadly amounts of asbestos. This is all that is left. As houses were emptied, the government demolished them and buried the rubble in a desperate attempt to reduce the contamination. The town was wiped from maps, struck from records, and by earlier this year there were only three stubborn residents refusing to leave.

Now there is only one. A video posted to the Free Documentary YouTube channel, reveals Mario Hartmann moved to Australia from Austria in and has lived in Wittenoom for almost all that time. When he arrived the mine, which closed in the s, was long gone and the town that once housed 1, people had just 50 left. He worked at the local power company until the electricity was shut off, delivered mail until there was none coming, and later hunted kangaroos to make ends meet.

Tourists continue to flock to an abandoned mine in Western Australia pictureddespite the town being so heavily contaminated with asbestos thousands of people have died. The town was left abandoned after the asbestos mine closed inleaving behind 3million tonnes of residue.

Measurements must be done every day so if he is sick or needs to leave town he gets Karijini in Tom Price, km away, to come in and do it. Mr Hartmann is unconcerned about the asbestos contamination that killed 80 per cent of anyone who has ever lived ohio worked in Wittenoom. Well, I like it here. I think the town is pretty good as long as you don't dig the asbestos up and all that, I reckon it's alright,' he told a German lonely maker.

It's like cancer, some people get it and some people don't. Mr Hartmann likes the tranquility and set up his house - well tidied and filled with family photos, a model ship, and his pet dog and rabbit - to work off the grid. There is power from roof solar panels, running water from a tank, a vegetable garden, and he even has a homemade pool. When asked what he missed about the rest of civilisation, Mr Hartmann answered: 'Well, nothing really.

If it wasn't for the asbestos this would be a big tourist thing, there's be people everywhere I wouldn't be here then.

However, Mr Hartmann admits life is difficult and requires planning to cope with the extreme remoteness and the scorching temperatures. If anything happens to him, like when he dislocated his shoulder once, help is several hours away. Mr Hartmann has managed to stay, and has ly vowed to stay unless the government gave him a big enough payoff.

But even as the last resident, Mr Hartmann is not always completely alone in his wasteland retreat as despite warning s posted all around, tourists are still flocking to Wittenoom. Wittenoom has been taken off maps and disconnected from the power grid, but defiant tourists continue to visit.

Warning s surround the town, but those desperate for an Instagram shot appear to pay no attention.

Visitors come to photograph the run-down Doc Holiday's Cafe, the gem shop with a caved in roof, abandoned cars and homes, and the barren land it all sits on. The images show families holidaying, groups of friends camping out, and tourists swimming in a nearby lake - sometimes with their pets.

Many are also sharing pictures of the warning advising them not to enter. Most don't mention in their captions the deadly contaminants in the air, or reference the issue at all.

Minister for Aboriginal Affairs and Lands, Ben Wyatt, told Nine Honey earlier this year there was still a terrifying amount of asbestos in the air, and the town would never again be safe to visit. Ironically the warnings, noting the high levels of asbestos in the air could cause cancer or lung disease, feature heavily in Instagram shots of the area.

The former mining town is popular with 'extreme tourists', who travel to physically dangerous places for kicks. He said when the Wittenoom mine closed inthere was three million tonnes of asbestos residue - known as tailings - left behind in the gorge and surrounding area.

Mr Wyatt said no amount of money or time would allow the town to be cleaned to a point where it would be acceptable for human habitation. Don't,' he said. They are serious warnings about serious health consequences.

There are plenty of gorges in WA which do not bring with them the threat of a fatal consequences. One man is seen posing in front of the on the edge of town, warning of the dangers within. This couple captioned their image 'rolling in the blue', which may have been a reference to the blue asbestos which was mined in Wittenoom.
